Serving grieving families has been an interest of proprietor Jeff Hoyt’s for a long time. Close family friends owned funeral homes that he often visited as a young child; then job shadowing at a Beaverton mortuary in high school sparked his interest again. Jeff decided to pursue a career in the funeral industry while studying premed at the University of Oregon in the late 70’s. He apprenticed at the Beaverton mortuary – Pegg, Paxson, and Spring Chapel – before attending the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science.

After earning his license, Jeff worked at the funeral homes he knew from his youth in Puyallup, Washington. Returning to Oregon, he managed the Fuiten Mortuaries before purchasing the Forest Grove and Vernonia chapels in 1992. He bought the Forest Grove Memorial Chapel four years later.

Jeff is a member of the Forest Grove United Church of Christ, Hospice of Washington Country Board, Vernonia Memorial Cemetery Beautification Committee, Forest Grove Rotary Club, and the Forest Grove Elks Lodge.

Jeff’s wife, Kathryn, was born and raised in Minnesota. She moved to Oregon after living in Los Angeles, Seattle, and Phoenix. Kathryn is the Human Resources Director for a private non-profit organization in downtown Portland. The couple’s pastimes include spending time on the river with their family, friends, and neighbors, traveling, hiking, volunteering with the Humane Society, and caring for their dog Roma.

Chris, Jeff’s oldest son has decided after working in the funeral business for many years, to pursue other career avenues. Greg is following his father’s career path, having completed the Mortuary Science Program at Mt. Hood Community College and is a fully licensed Funeral Director working together with his father.

  

Greg Hoyt was born in Hillsboro and raised in Forest Grove. After graduating from Forest Grove High School he completed his apprenticeship program at Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt and graduated from the Mortuary Science Program at Mt. Hood Community College. Greg finds fulfillment working alongside his father. 

Greg's wife, Rachel, was born and raised in Lodi, California. As a teenager, she and her family moved to Hillsboro where she graduated from Glencoe High School. Her father served as pastor for many years at Trinity Lutheran. Rachel is a preschool teacher at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Forest Grove.The couple is members of both Trinity and Mt. Olive Lutheran churches and their pastimes include skiing and golfing.

 

 

Jane A. Schneider, a long time Forest Grove funeral director, continues to serve the Forest Grove community. 

Jane and her husband raised three sons, Robert E. “Bob”, Richard S. “Rick” and Randall C. “Randy” Schneider; and one daughter, Cynthia Jane “Cindy” Schneider Greenley. 

Jane was born in Alameda, California and raised in Sacramento, California moving later to Tracy California. She later returned to Sacramento, attending the American Legion School, Stanford Junior High School, California Junior High School and McClatchy High School, having been a graduate of the class of 1944. She then attending Junior College receiving her nurse’s training at St. Luke’s hospital in San Francisco, California, graduating as an R.N. in 1948. 

Jane has been active in various local community organizations including the Order of the Eastern Star, Forest Chapter #42 and Home Star Chapter #187, having served as Worthy Matron, 2001-2002. She is also a member of the Oak Park Rebekahs #381 in Sacramento, California for over 50 years. Jane has also served as Mother Advisor for the Rainbow Girls, Forest Assembly #34 in Forest Grove and a member of the State Executive Committee for the Oregon Rainbow Girls. 

In her free time, Jane enjoys spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also likes shopping, traveling, playing cards and caring for her dog, “Kahlua”.

 

Ross Mathews, a long time Hillsboro funeral director, continues to serve the Hillsboro community. Ross and his wife, Anita, first came to Hillsboro in 1967 as partners in two of the local funeral homes. The couple raised three daughters, Marixa Mathews, Marcella Ungar and Marleta Stansberry. 

Ross has been active in active in various local community organizations including the Hillsboro Optimist Club, Hillsboro Rotary Club, Hillsboro Odd Fellows Club, Hillsboro Masonic Lodge, Hillsboro Elks Lodge and the Knights of Pythias Lodge. He served as Noble Grand of the Hillsboro 100F #54 of Hillsboro. 

He first joined the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce in 1967 and has been affiliated with the chamber serving on many committees including the board of directors and the Ambassadors from that time. 

He served the schools as president of the Hil Hi Spartan Parents Club in 1986-87. He was named by the student body as Honorary Spartan in 1987. 

He was a member of the Tuality Medical Foundation Board of Directors for twenty years. 

Currently and for the past many years he has served Hillsboro Planning Commission appointed to that office by Mayor Shirley Huffman. 

The Washington County Board of Commissioners appointed him to Washington County Department of Disability, Aging and Veterans Services Advisory Council. He served as chair of the council. 

He joined the Optimist International in 1961 and has held all local and district offices of the Pacific Northwest district. In addition he served at the International level on several committees and was Vice President of Optimist International in 1978. 

In 2005 the Pacific Northwest District of Optimist International presented Ross Mathews with the Roy Proctor Lifetime Achievement Award of Optimist International. This district includes Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Idaho and Oregon. 

In 2005 he was also honored by the Hillsboro Kiwanis Club when they presented to him the first Annual “Dale Scheller Community Service Award”. 

In addition to local involvement with his profession, Ross served nationally as a board member and president of the Oregon Funeral Directors Association in 1978. He was named the outstanding State Director of the Golden Rule of Funeral Service in 1983. He was also named National Funeral Director of the Year by the Cincinnati Insurance Company in 1985. 

He developed a woodworking hobby that includes the crafting of unique birdhouses and bird feeders. His work has been shown at various shows in the Northwest, Texas and New York.

 

Dan grew up in Canby and Milwaukie areas of Oregon.  For more than six years, he served in the U.S. Army as a laboratory and pathology technician - from Utah, to Germany, to Vietnam.  His last job entailed opening the chemistry department of a new hospital on the Army base in Monterey, California.

After the service, Dan apprenticed at Donelson, Sewell & Mathews Mortuary in Hillsboro.  He worked for Ross Mathews while attending Mortuary Science School in Gresham.  Since earning his license in 1976, he has worked at and managed funeral homes in Oregon and Washington.  Dan has been with Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt since 2005.

Dan and his wife, Cynthia, have five sons. Cynthia is employed with Dr. Brian Kelly as a Registered Nurse. Dan has served two terms as club president and one as District Lt. Governor of the Hillsboro Kiwanis Club.  He also served on the Washington County Hospice board.  He and Cynthia enjoy spending time on the Oregon coast, hiking, gardening, and attending church. 

"It's a real pleasure seeing and serving people I've known for many years," he says.

 

 

Peni was born in and has called Forest Grove home her entire life.  She is raising two wonderful sons, both currently attending school.  Her parents, Texas natives of Spanish descent, brought Peni up with strong religious and moral values by which she continues to work, live and raise her sons.

When her father passed away in 2004 and her grandfather died shortly thereafter, Peni realized she wanted to employ her customer service skills and experience by helping others in their time of need. “Assisting families on this level is very comforting and fulfilling to me,” says Peni. “I hope to continue in this profession as it enables me to life strongly by my belief that all people deserve to be treated with the utmost respect.”

 

  

Stephanie was born in Hillsboro and raised in the community of Verboort. She graduated from Banks High School, Class of 92. All of her work experiences have been focused on customer service and interaction with the public.

Stephanie is raising four children in the Hillsboro community. In her free time, she enjoys working in her yard, baking pies for family gatherings and being with her family. Stephanie also volunteers for the Mexico Mission at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aloha - serving as fundraising coordinator for their efforts in Tijuana. Since the mid 80's Stephanie has been volunteering at the Annual Verboort Sausage and Kraut Dinner, and enjoys seeing the people she serves year after year.

Driven by her compassion and genuine concern for others, Stephanie chose to work in the funeral industry. She began her career with Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt in the spring of 2008 and her heart goes out to every family she serves. Stephanie is our office administrator and will work closely with our families, preparing obituaries and service folders, processing insurance claims, invoicing and billing.

Reva was born in Brigham City, Utah and raised near the Vernonia, Oregon community. She attended Scofield Grade School and graduated from Banks Union High School. Reva’s careers have always been in service related areas. After retiring from a vending and food service company in Portland, Oregon, she has been a caregiver to the elderly. Reva loves working in the funeral industry and feels that the years spent as a caregiver has prepared her for this type of work.

Reva has many interests, among them is genealogy. She has been keeping records for her large family for several years. Reva is also an avid Dutch oven cooker and enjoys sharing that interest with family and friends. Reva loves cooking for large groups and greatly enjoys canning and preserving fruits, vegetables and jams.

 

  

Roma relocated to the Pacific Northwest after being adopted from the Humane Society as an eight-week-old pup. Being half whippet and half lab, Roma is an excellent swimmer and loves to run. Roma’s favorite pastime is jumping off the dock of her floating home to retrieve sticks and swim in the river on sunny days.
